A neutral colour palette has been a tried and true design trick to create fresh, clean and open living spaces. In communal spaces like kitchens and living rooms where family relics lay and visitors want to be intrigued with surprising and interesting room elements—the bedroom can become the perfect space to experiment with neutral design techniques catered to your personal tastes.
As the bedroom is where you both start and finish your day, the ambience and environment you create is paramount! Neutrality provides a sense of cleanliness and refreshing harmony when the rest of a home is well-lived in. Below we have accumulated some great and often, easy, interior ideas to get you started on making your very own neutral bedroom atmosphere!
When considering the most-used part of a bedroom, of course the bed is the first item that pops into your mind. Both the design and comfort of a bed should be considered when rethinking what to change. Luckily, there are many options depending on your preferences that can provide both style and comfort.
Whether you prefer cotton, satin, or silk—neutral bedding creates a clean look even when you've had no time to wash or make-up your bed. Try sticking with lighter colours when choosing sheets and duvets (think grey-scale and off-whites)—since they are the main parts of bedding. The fun part comes when looking at pillows and throws—you can still stick with neutrals on these, but as pictured, choose refreshing and fun patterns to add a fun focal point to the bed. Remember, choose what is most comfortable!

Neutral walls can be achieved in so many ways! This makes the process more experimental and exciting. If you prefer simple paint for its ease-of-use and cost effectiveness, that's perfectly ok too. Pictured here we've provided an example of how neutral and natural elements can be combined for a cosy, quaint setting—with exposed bricks and wood-beam ceilings.
If you love this look, don't assume that you can't have it if your pre-existing home has no ceiling beams and bricks—it is now possible to buy overlays and fake bricks
to achieve the same effect for minimal cost and effort! If you already have wooden beams or ANY exposed wood in your home then you should consider using different hues of neutral wood stains to create a unique design. Textured wall papers (not pictured) are another way to add neutrality to a room as well, and better yet, try the many types of textured wall papers that now provide depth and drama to normally bland bedroom walls.

Think of pillows, throws, lighting fixtures and decorative figures when considering neutral, harmonious decor for your newly neutral bedroom. As with any room, décor can add a special element to your bedroom without making it look too cluttered. Stick with bright whites, light browns and any colours on the grey-scale.
For added texture use different types of candles—all shapes, sizes and heights when trying to make the design look thoughtful. Pictured here, are wonderful cement figures placed on a nightstand that look beautiful, without overcrowding the space. Leave posters, wall decals and bright-coloured decorative items at bay and opt for more natural materials such as wood and cement. When choosing lighting options—keep it simple with exposed, industrial light, or tubular steel. If your room is predominately neutral, then using dark wood finishes on furnishings can bring a pop of colour to a space that could otherwise be considered too bland!
'Altbau' (old-build in German) and old Parisian apartments typically come to mind when one thinks of class parquet flooring—however, parquet floors can add a refreshed sense of depth and drama to almost any home—particularly bedrooms. Parquet is difficult to install, so thus should be left to professions (don't skimp on such choices, please!) Most parquet is done using neutral, wood-grain finishes—and where white or light colour walls are concerned it can create the illusion of height to any area.
Although this design example is a corridor setting, the parquet allows all areas of the home to seamlessly flow together, creating a fresh and even whimsical environment. The best part about parquet is its ability to be so incredibly beautiful that further decorating is often times seen as unnecessary for a truly minimal, clean look.
Bedroom lighting is definitely on-par, importance wise, with comfortable, fresh bedding. The lighting of any room is the source of the ambience and mood created and for a space that both starts and ends our days, the right kind of lighting techniques are important.
If natural lighting isn't so much available in your bedroom quarters than think of more creative ways to utilize and diffuse artificial lighting. Track lighting is usually cheap and easy to install (only a few hours) once you've chosen the right placement and design. Use textured cement or a reflective tile backsplash in your bedroom as well as hidden track lighting to reflect and diffuse artificial lighting to set the perfect mood for relaxation. Here, hidden track lighting is paired with a modern globe lighting fixture to add a visual focal point and seamless transition from the wall, down to the area for the bed and floor.

Wall decals now come in various designs and colour schemes, take just minutes to apply and can be added or removed whenever you, as a homeowner, decide. Particularly useful for those of you renting and trying to temporarily alter a space without permanent changes, wall decals are the perfect design tool.
Here, a beautiful three-dimensional wall decal design is used to create an illusionist space, depth and texture to a neutral setting. If you opt for a wall decal similar to this one, remember to keep decorations to a minimum and let the wall do all the talking! Using a grey-scale colour scheme when selecting a wall decal can allow for darker decorations to pop when added!
