We don't often get to see a heady mix of old architectural ethos with new, so this home by Simetrika was a sight for sore eyes. It is one of those homes where your grandparents will feel as comfortable as you. It is not only pleasing to the eyes, but very comfortable to live in.

Located in the heart of Madrid, it is as stylish as a modern apartment but, at the same time, as grand in its décor as any classical Mediterranean villa. But no, we are not going to reveal anything more. Not until you join us on a trip to review its fantastic interior with a romantic vibe…

Cheerful kitchen design

The cheerful interior of the fully customised kitchen is as delightful to behold as to work in. Storage units, kitchen counter and worktops with a vintage feel stylise this space.

Colourful glass accents and ample amounts of natural light are also responsible for its cheery appearance.

Open floor plan

Simatrika was entrusted with a comprehensive reformation of this Madrid apartment. Neither the designer nor the owners were inclined to destroy its unique historical essence. During the course of the rehabilitation, Simatrika’s team of experts carefully recovered many of its beautiful characteristics and changed only those that were essential for a modern day household.

In the process you get to see a stunning open plan dining and living room bathed in natural light. Eclecticism is its mainstay. Original wooden beams give the ceiling a stylish edge. Hinged doors, in the backdrop of the preserved brick walls, add a sense of nostalgia.

A closer look at the dining room

Vintage furniture with a shabby chic look decorates this space. You can see the elegant stucco work on the kitchen ceiling, beautiful display cabinets and the chic chandelier beautifying the space with its mere presence.

Wood flooring is interrupted by carpet tiles. Rustic structural details in the wood give the space an unusual but very appealing look.

Breakfast room

The inclusion of a breakfast room is an old custom that is slowly dying due to an acute lack of space in the modern homes. This old apartment, however, retains its small breakfast room adjacent to the kitchen. Premium quality British wallpaper has been used to decorate its walls. Like the open plan family room, this one boasts solid oak flooring as well.

A large display cabinet stationed here increases the storage space. However, the tiny breakfast table, flanked by graceful chairs, proves itself to be the cynosure of all eyes. A pretty pendant light, decorated with colourful floral motifs, makes its presence felt too.

Bedroom

The master bedroom is spacious and very relaxing. Had it not been for the partly exposed beams, pillars and wood flooring, this room would have been overpowered by the milky white tone. The old time décor close to the fireplace and stylish furniture enhance its charm further.

Bathroom

To give an authentically classical feel, the designers decided to invest in a cast iron bathtub. The wall décor of this spacious bathroom deserves a mention too. It is partly designed with modern tiles and part of it has been covered with bright yellow wallpaper.

Kid’s room

Any child will feel content in a warm and comfortable room like this. This corner of the home also retains some of its old time glamour – decorative stucco marginalia and now exposed brick walls are two of those. Black and white stone flooring thoroughly compliments the décor. It is partly covered with a monochrome area rug.

The room is stylised with a kid’s cot, dresser and large wardrobe. It also has bi-fold doors, allowing excellent views of the neighbouring area.

Living room

Finally, we get a chance to have a closer look at the living room decorated with a large daybed and cosy chairs. The round coffee table proves to be one of its biggest attractions. Antique iron radiators have been installed in the place of the erstwhile fireplaces.

The entire room is decorated with framed artworks, mirrors, flower vases and table lamps in bright hues. But at no point of time do you feel suffocated by the presence of so many items. It is one of the hallmarks of the interior design that also gives such an old apartment a beautiful modern look.

Now you know how to integrate old time charm with trendy modern décor. If your home also boasts a glorious past, like many classical buildings of Malaysia, try to preserve its old world charm as much as possible. It will help you to create a unique setting for you and your family.

If you feel enthused about the stylish makeover of this apartment, then you will love this home with a similarly glorious past and equally commendable present.
