High Line Penthouse, New York, NY, BILLINKOFF ARCHITECTURE PLLC BILLINKOFF ARCHITECTURE PLLC Minimalist corridor, hallway & stairs

This penthouse in a recently completed glass and steel building on the far west side of Chelsea has commanding views of the High Line, Empire State Building and Hudson River. It is the second residence Billinkoff Architecture has designed for this family.

The 4,500sf apartment is two-story: living, dining, family, playroom and kitchen on the lower floor; three bedrooms, utility and study above. A 1,000sf north facing terrace runs the full 50 foot length of the apartment.

Dining and living room are separated by a see-thru gas fireplace clad in stone and blackened steel. The floors throughout are Brazilian walnut and stone. The millwork is rift cut teak. The primary work surface in the kitchen is an oversized island clad in quartz. All appliances are integrated with the millwork and include a custom stainless steel range hood that extends the full width of the kitchen.

At the heart of the apartment is an open staircase of blackened steel. Screening it from the entry hall is a series of wood wing-shaped fins painted silver on one side, eggplant on the other. The screen’s sculptural and kinetic qualities both reveal and conceal the stair depending from which angle it is viewed.

Working collaboratively with the owners, Billinkoff Architecture selected all the furnishings. Included are pieces purchased for their first apartment along with new pieces chosen specifically for this project.
