Frame House, Atelier M+A Atelier M+A Single family home

The project is a transformation of a 50-year old dilapidated terrace house in Singapore. The drive for the design is to bring in natural light and natural ventilation to the deep and dim interior, which is the result of a typical mass-developed housing project in Singapore.

The introduction of an internal open-to-sky courtyard is the most important feature of the house bringing daylight and generates natural ventilation, both critical factors for dwelling in the tropical climate

Sandwiched among the grim terrace housing estate, the house directs and frames one's viewpoint towards the interior space within. The steel frame on the front facade and around windows ward off rain effectively, and are painted in black as a contrast from the white walls to accentuate the framing effect. Windows are carefully positioned not only to bring in light but also to frame views of the sky and greenery.

To create a sense of space with its narrow and lengthy plot, when the sliding doors are open the ground level becomes an open free plan, opening to the front patio and internal courtyard. One could view from the patio all the way to the kitchen situated at the rear. The ground level connects the living, dining, kitchen and the internal courtyard seamlessly, with the courtyard extending to the sky. A straight flight of staircase with a high stairwell connects all floors and creates a vertical continuity within the house.
