Renovation in Meidai-mae

We had a request from an owner to renovate one of the rooms in a 40 year old building for rent. The room was a typical layout seen in the 80’s, but this type of layout does not match today’s taste and feels narrow. So we started from removing the partitions and change it to a single room. However, if we only furnished the room with sanitary fittings and a kitchen, privacy issue may occur, and above all, the life style will be totally thrust upon the resident. As a new style of rented accommodation, our goal was to offer not only a life space but a life style. We believe that such choice for a residence is modern and a highly value-added offer. Though the construction cost and time for completion was limited, since the room was located on a upper floor with an excellent view, and with our proposal of life space, we were confident of the rich life in this room

    In and Out
This project was not for a specific person but for “someone”, and we wanted to design simply to make the life proactive. So we imagined the life in this room, and arranged a large practical shelf in the center of the room to gently separate the room and for rounding circulation. In addition, as we arranged built shelves with gap and slit intentionally, the space has a taste of fun and the hirers can use extra space freely. We used curtains instead of walls and cabinet doors to visualaize the nice breeze from the location. By doing this, we obtained a dynamic space that can be separated and unified easily.

    Painting
When it comes to renovation projects, the traditional contrast between the “old and new” can give unnecessary stress to life. So we aimed to combine both the old and new materials moderately, and painted the room in translucent white to give the room a bright image. The coating for concrete protection was blended perfectly, and for woods, the white paint was swabbed off to leave the taste of the wood basis slightly. As a result, the room was completed with a soft contrast, drawing the taste of each materials used. The color planning for each faces of furniture and walls not only applied basic painting functions such as waterproof and protection, it gives a different taste from where you see.
